The State of Tamil Nadu v. Junglee Games India Private Limited (2026)

ABSTRACT The case of State of Tamil Nadu v. Junglee Games India (2026 INSC 594 | 2026 SCO.LR 6(1)[3]) was decided by the Supreme Court of India on 27 May 2026 by a Bench comprising Hon'ble Justice J.B. Pardiwala and Justice R. Mahadevan. In this case, the constitutionality of amendments made to the Tamil Nadu Gaming Act, 1930 was challenged in Madras High Court, where the court held that the state can not regulate betting and gambling on games based on skills under Entry 34 of the State List. The same was challenged by the state government in the Supreme Court and the impugned judgment was set aside. Noting that even a game of skill played with stakes on the outcome amounts to "betting" under Entry 34. Further, Entry 34 does not include protection from betting on games of skill and is not protected under Article 19(1)(g).
