Foundations of Legal Drafting

Practical Skill-Building in Supreme Court Drafting, Issue Framing, and Professional Legal Writing

Adv. Ashita Chawla, Advocate-on-Record, Supreme Court of India, and Founder & Managing Partner, Convalexa Legal

The Foundations of Legal Drafting workshop was conducted by Adv. Ashita Chawla, Advocate-on-Record, Supreme Court of India, and Founder & Managing Partner, Convalexa Legal. The session was designed as a practice-oriented drafting masterclass, equipping students with structured techniques and professional insights essential for litigation drafting at the highest level.

Prior to the workshop, participants were provided with a drafting problem and were asked to prepare a synopsis, list of dates, and questions of law. This exercise formed the basis of a live, interactive review during the session, where students received real-time feedback on drafting content, formatting standards, analytical structure, and presentation quality.

Adv. Chawla introduced participants to the technical nuances of Supreme Court drafting, including:

1. identification of material facts and issues,
2. precision in framing questions of law,
3. drafting strategy and document structuring,
4. procedural relevance and court formatting conventions,
5. linkage between drafting, advocacy, and case theory.

The workshop also addressed skill-development pathways for young professionals, including how to refine drafting competence, interpret statutes while drafting, and effectively present drafting experience on a CV for internships and employment opportunities.

The session was highly interactive, with detailed responses to participant queries and practical guidance on building drafting proficiency beyond classroom learning. Overall, the workshop offered a substantive, experiential learning environment, strengthening participants’ confidence, clarity, and professional drafting discipline.

Student Reflections

Dishita Lumba — 2nd Year, B.A. LL.B., Symbiosis Law School, Noida
“I have nothing but good things to say about the session. We were given a drafting problem beforehand and asked to frame the synopsis, list of dates, and questions of law. During the session, I was able to present my work and received real-time feedback on what to include, formatting, and how to improve it.
Adv. Ashita Chawla was highly interactive and professional. She taught us the nuances of Supreme Court drafting and also answered questions on statute interpretation, building drafting skills, and how to reflect drafting experience on a CV. The session was extremely fruitful, and I am grateful to both Ma’am and Vintage Legal for organising it.”

Maseka Godwin — 3rd Year Law Student, University of Lusaka
“Learning how to draft legal issues was one of the most enriching experiences in my legal journey. The instructor broke complex legal concepts into understandable steps and guided us through each stage with clarity and patience.
Her commitment to our learning stood out — no question was ever too small or complex. The experience was not only informative but truly inspiring. Thanks to her, I now approach drafting with greater confidence and precision.”

Nazia Rahman — 1st Year, BBA LL.B., Christ University, Delhi NCR
“The Drafting Workshop was an enriching and practically oriented learning experience. It went beyond theory and provided a structured understanding of drafting — its purpose, categories, and relevance in litigation, corporate, and regulatory practice.
We worked on drafting contracts, petitions, affidavits, and writs, supported by real-life examples and live drafting exercises. The workshop strengthened our drafting ability and enhanced our understanding of legal articulation, procedural compliance, and professional presentation.”
